Stock Up on Canned Goods

“So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: ‘Go through the camp and tell the people, “Get your supplies ready.  Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.”‘”   Joshua 1:10-11

I find people absolutely amusing.  There are few things that I find more interesting than simply watching people and the funny things that we all do.  One of my favorite activities recently has been watching people at Walmart. The other day, I watched someone filling their cart with some grocery items. In our current situation, their behavior made some sense. However, I also overheard them saying how no one in their house liked what they were getting, but somehow they still felt compelled to get those items. Now before you get upset, there were a whole lot of the items these people were getting. It was just amusing to see people stocking up on stuff that they didn’t like and, in all likelihood, would never use. People are funny creatures.

I wonder what our lives would be like if we took prepared with the same type of urgency to encounter God.  How often do we go to worship without any expectation that God will be there or that He will do anything spectacular?  How often is our pressing concern in worship where we will go for lunch rather than on how we can encounter God more fully?  You see, we don’t have to wonder whether or not God is going to show up in worship because He has already promised that if we have gathered in His name for the purpose fo worshipping Him that He will be right there in our midst.

The Israelites were about to take possession of God’s promise, and that would require preparation.  If we are going to experience all that God has for us – if we are going to possess His promise – then we must prepare ourselves as well.  But unlike our current trips to the grocery store, we can rest assured that if we prepare to truly encounter Jesus He will grant us our desire and we will encounter Him like never before.
